DIY: Upcycling my sweatshirt with iron-on letters

It’s lit.

Every now and then whilst scrolling through Pinterest or surveying the array of stylish strangers in the city, I get inspired to create. It can be anything from a pair of earrings to a bag to someone’s hair or makeup that sparks my own desire to make something.

Lately, I’ve been saving a lot of graphic tee ideas on my Pinterest board and I decided it was time to make one. I had the sweatshirt already. I just needed phrase in iron-on letters and an actual iron. I decided on LIT MAJOR because I don’t have a lot of clothing with references to my background in English Literature and writing. And, as an emerging writer I definitely want more swag.

How to DIY

I got the iron-on letters from Michaels and they’re so easy to use. I found that the hardest part was getting the placement right. It took me about 15 minutes to lay the letters out perfect. During this time I let the iron warm up and unpackaged the letters.

Once the iron was warm I flipped the bottom part of shirt and laid it over the letters to protect them from the iron. After ironing them on I flipped the sweater inside out and ironed it again to make sure the letters adhered to the sweatshirt properly.

It’s LIT!

Once the ironing was complete, I left the sweatshirt to cool. And voila! It’s ready to wear. I usually wash it in cold water and hang to dry. It’s become one of my favourite sweatshirts to wear and all it took was a little DIY.
