Read my lips: these are my lip care essentials

I wanted to pay lip service to a few of my favourite products!

Today may be National Lipstick Day but I want to talk about the lip products I use before I apply my favourite lippies. As a girl who loves wearing a bold lip whenever possible, I know how important it is to prep and care for my lips.

I’m one of those people who have two or three lip products rolling around at the bottom of my purse at all times. One is a lipstick but the other two are definitely a lip balm, lip scrub, or lip gloss. It depends on the season I’m in and what my lips need. From everyday drugstore balms to Sephora-approved lip treatments, I’ve tried a fair share of lip products. These ones are my absolutely favourites.

I’ve always loved lip balms and glosses but it wasn’t until I started working in beauty that I realized how important lip care is. I wrote an article for Canadian Living about lip treatments and learned about how delicate the skin around you lips is to everything. It was also around this time that I noticed my lips are very sensitive to the sun. I didn’t think I could get a sunburn. But, the last few years have shown me that my lips will burn if I don’t protect them during the summer months.

Sun protection for lips

I don’t wear sunscreen as often as I know I should—aka everyday—but I’m obviously better about it during the summer. This is largely to do with my fear of lip sunburns, which are not fun at all. Depending on how hot it is, my sunburns range from a little dryness to a full on blistering, swollen mess. It’s horrible but I’ve finally found the perfect combination of lip products to protect my skin. And, if I happen to get a minor sunburn on my lips, I know how to take care of it.

Enter my drug store saviours, Blistex and Nivea. I prep my lips with Nivea Hydro Care to hydrate my lips in the morning, regardless of the temperature outside. The Blistex Ultra Protection has SPF 30, which is perfect for summer. I apply it after I’ve done my morning skincare routine but before I go outside. I honestly believe it’s helped protect my lips and reduced the intensity of my sunburns significantly. Instead of being swollen and irritated for days, my lips are maybe a little swollen and just a bit flaky. But, that’s when I reach for my Nivea Hydro Care or, if it’s really bad, my secret weapon.

Blistex Conditioning Lip Sereum,

Lip serum to the rescue

This product is my first lip serum and now I swear by them. In the past, if my lips were dry, I would slather on a thick cream or even Vaseline. But, I learned that adding a heavy layer of anything to my skin wouldn’t hydrate my skin. It would just clog my pores. Enter this serum. Its lightweight, vitamin-E-packed formula, is a godsend for the dry skin around my lips. I’ve been using it the for the last couple months and my lips look and feel amazing. This lip serum left my lips feeling soft, hydrated, and completely healed from any and all sunburn damage. This product will be in my purse for the duration of the summer and possibly forever.

Kiss Kiss Patchology Lip Perfecting Duo: Flashpatch Hydrating Lip Gels & Lip Service Gloss-to-Balm Treatment,

Treat yo’self

Every night I will treat my lips to a little lip treatment. Sometimes I just use the LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask. Other times I like using an actual sheet mask. I really like Patchology’s Lip Gels and discovered they had a matching lip treatment. It’s a match made in heaven. I start with the lip gel mask and leave it on for about five to ten minutes. The serum it’s soaked in is lovely and has a little green tea extract in it to soothe.

When I finish with my lip mask, I apply the lip treatment. The lip treatment goes on as a thick gloss that tingles initially but quickly dies down. After about five minutes, the skin absorbs most of the formula, leaving behind a balmy texture on the lips. I can see myself using this in the morning as well to give my lips a little boost.

A balmy lippie

If I had to pick my favourite lip products, Fenty Beauty by Rihanna is definitely on the top five list. Her collection of Mattemoiselle lipsticks and trio of Glossbomb lip glosses are some of go-to lippies. So, when I learned about a new lip balm, I just about died.

The formula is light, hydrating and it smells incredible. I think it’s the perfect mixture of tropical ingredients like shea, mango seed butter, apricot oil, and coco seed butter. The product description on Sephora says this lip balm will give you a natural finish. I think it does look natural but there is a subtle glossy finish. I’m a fan because this lip balm has a bit of shin without feeling thick or heavy like a typical lip gloss. It’s perfect for summer, or any season really.

LANEIGE Lip Glowy Balm,

Gloss. Glow. Balm.

I finally got my hands on the latest lip product by LANEIGE and it was definitely worth the wait. As someone who refilled her sample jar with the LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask every month so she could fit it in her bag, I was so happy when I heard LANEIGE was dropping a lip balm. Not only is the balm a lighter than the mask formula, naturally, but the tube packaging makes it easy to apply. This is another product that has a glossy finish, despite being a lip balm. After a few minutes it does dry down though, so it looks very natural. The berry flavour is my absolute favourite so I had to get it. I was hoping there would be a bit of a tint or stain to the lip balm but I still love the product.

And that’s a wrap! These are my favourite lip care products and they are ALL essential to my everyday skincare routine. How do you take care of your lips? Do you use any of these products? Are you tempted to try one or two? Tell me in the comments!
